Hello! Happy Monday!
Today in Math we started exploring different subtraction mental math strategies.
We learned that we should always start with common sense - looking and assessing both numbers to see how close together they are. Many times, we can find the difference of numbers without having to use any strategy at all! (Ex: 23-19 or 71 - 68 or 54 - 47)
We also learned that when the digits of the second number are all less than the digits in the first number (meaning no regrouping is necessary) we can substract the digits in the order they appear. (ex: 78 - 64 or 93 - 41 or 55 - 32)
We then jumped into the question 63 - 28. After working through the question on our own, we shared our answers and noticed we arrived at two different answers: 35 and 45. Different students shared their steps with the class, where it was determined that the correct answer was indeed 35. We learned that some of us are still holding on to the traditional algorithm, but that we also already have some great mental strategies to solve subtraction questions where regrouping is required.
We will continue to explore different subtraction questions and strategies in class this week!
