Hello, families!
Today, to close off the week of Truth and Reconciliation, we spent an extended time in homeroom to learn about the Witness Blanket.
We started with Mme reading the story, When We Were Alone by David A. Robertson.
Listen to David Robertson read the book HERE. |
We then began learning about and exploring some of the objects included in the blanket.
As a class, we chose to begin our learning journey exploring the object: child's shoe. (Click HERE). We read about the shoe and also watched short videos of the witness, Harold and his connection to the shoe. He shared his stories of attending residential school and the lessons he had learned from a young age (12 years old).
The history of the Witness Blanket is heavy and is a lot to process all at once. Reconciliation is a journey that continues far beyond one day a year. It is more than just wearing an orange shirt.
We will continue our learnings and discussions here at school and invite families to open up the dialogue at home. The Witness Blanket site: https://witnessblanket.ca/ is a great place to start.
