Can You Beat the Tax Man?

This morning in Math, we tried to beat the sneaky "percepteur persévérant" (aka: le Tax Man).

Check out the question below:

Please ask me: What was my group's strategy? What cheque was the best one to start with and why? After we beat the tax collector with 12 cheques, we moved up to 16 cheques and then 24. Does the starting number or strategy stay the same every time?

Math robots and a special visit!

Hello, friends of learning! Happy Thursday!

Today in Math we worked with our table groups to solve a robot math problem. We collaborated to choose a strategy, show our work and add details to ensure our answer was clear. We then explained our steps to the class to deepen our understanding.

We also had a special visit from Mme Boyko and Mme McLachlan. They stopped by to lead an activity on "les quatre valeurs de l'école" : Respect, Intégrité, Responsabilité, Excellence.

We had the chance to write down words and examples we felt represented our school beliefs, and then had the chance to pick the value (belief) most important to us and write it down (and have our picture taken)!

It was a great celebration of our school, our beliefs and each other!

Please ask me about what I wrote and why. What does it mean to be "un chevalier?" How am I and how can I be a good friend, classmate and citizen to others?

Friday the 13th!

Hello families! Happy Friday!

Today, to wrap up our morning of learning, we did a "Friday the 13th" challenge. Working in teams of 2 (or 3) we answered Math questions, trivia questions, phobia questions and superstition questions.

Please ask me: What question was the easiest? The trickiest? Can I tell you one (or more) of the phobias I learned about?

Have a great weekend! :)

Emoji Store!

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Math we were tasked with the following question:

"There is a new Emoji store opening at Polo Park. To celebrate, the store will be giving out gifts with purchase. Every third customer will get an emoji keychain. Every 8th customer will get an emoji pillow. Every 12th customer will get a $15 gift card. Is it possible to receive all three gifts? If so, what place would you need to be in line? If this offer applies to the first 100 customers, how many will receive all 3 gifts?"

Please ask me about my group's strategy. How did we arrive at the answer? What was the follow up question we were asked? What was the solution?

Happy Monday!

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in Math we started exploring different subtraction mental math strategies.

We learned that we should always start with common sense - looking and assessing both numbers to see how close together they are. Many times, we can find the difference of numbers without having to use any strategy at all! (Ex: 23-19  or  71 - 68  or  54 - 47)

We also learned that when the digits of the second number are all less than the digits in the first number (meaning no regrouping is necessary) we can substract the digits in the order they appear. (ex: 78 - 64  or  93 - 41  or  55 - 32)

We then jumped into the question 63 - 28. After working through the question on our own, we shared our answers and noticed we arrived at two different answers: 35 and 45. Different students shared their steps with the class, where it was determined that the correct answer was indeed 35. We learned that some of us are still holding on to the traditional algorithm, but that we also already have some great mental strategies to solve subtraction questions where regrouping is required.

We will continue to explore different subtraction questions and strategies in class this week!

First 2023 Friday!

Hello! Happy Friday!

Today in Math, it was all about hotdogs!

Consider the following problem: "Hotdogs are available in packages of 12. The buns are available in packages of 8. What is the biggest number (close to 100) of hotdogs you can make without having any leftovers? How many packages of each item would you need to buy?"

(Next, try:  hotdogs -  24 and buns - 12; hotdogs - 36 and buns - 16.)

Please ask me about my group's strategy. Did anything change between the first and second questions? What about the 2nd and 3rd questions? Also, why don't they sell buns and hotdogs in the same size packages? 🤔

Welcome back! 2023!

Hello! Welcome back! Happy Thursday! Happy 2023!

We had a good morning together chatting about our holidays, remembering class routines and dusting off our French, Math and Science brains.

We can't wait to get started with all the new learning adventures 2023 has in store!

Doing interviews with our classmates. Please ask me about my silly "all about me" story!

Doing our final prep and practice for the debates we began planning before the break. Debates are set for period 3 tomorrow! (Please ask me about my debate - what 'side' am I on and what is my team's strongest argument?)
