Today in Math, we worked with our table groups to match-up sets of numbers represented as: a picture, a percent, a fraction, a ratio and a decimal number.

For Math period #2, we worked in randomized teams of 3 to solve different percent problems, all of which involved a set of animals with different characteristics.
Ex: There are 8 animals. 50% have stripes. 70% are in a tree.
What might that drawing look like? Is there more than one way to represent the criteria?
What other scenarios can you create with percents, using 8, 10, 20 or even 25 animals?
* Reminder: Inservice (no school) tomorrow. Enjoy the day!

Today in Math we explored the following question:
Painted Cube
Paint
all the sides of a 3 x 3 x 3 cube. Once it is dry take it apart into its 1
x 1 x 1 unit cubes. How many of these unit cubes have paint on three
faces? Two faces? One face? No faces? Explore for 4 x 4 x 4, etc.
We all worked well in our groups, approaching the task and explaining our work in so many different ways. Please ask me: What was my group's strategy? How did the answers change as the cube's dimensions increased? What answer won't change, regardless of the size of the cube? Why?

Hello! Happy April!
It was great to see a classroom of smiling faces this morning! We were also happy to welcome a new student to our learning community. Welcome, Savinah!
This morning, we started with a "Trouve Quelqu'un Qui" activity to see what our classmates were up to over the break.
We then began a Math unit about percents, and started by watching the short video, "If the World Were a Village." We took the data shared in the film and represented it in different ways: tables, 100 blocks and circle graphs.
Please ask me what information was most surprising and which one made me think the most. (Mme's biggest takeaway was that the world's resources are not equally divided and there are way too many people who go daily without having enough food to eat.)
We finished the morning with a not-so-appetizing Science activity: a final observation of our Mycètes (Fungi) bread. The bread was left in an airtight container over the break, and the bread mold grew, grew, grew! Our conclusion: Fungi do thrive in humid environments over dry environments, as we expected. Also, moldy bread, even when sealed in a ziploc bag, is stinky!
We are looking forward to a great week of learning! :)
