A Friday in Pictures

Hello families! Happy Friday!

To start our morning, our SOS team presented to us about mentors.

We each chose a mentor in our lives, wrote their name on a feather (to be made into a collage here at the school) and made them a thank you card that we can share with them the next time we see them.

In Science, we are currently working on a short research task about invertebrates. After reading a short text about an annelid, mollusk or sponge, we are writing short, specific pieces of information on our sheet (things such as habitat, diet and interesting facts). We will finish this task next week.

Have a great weekend! :)

Cost of Living

Hello! Happy Friday!

Today in Math we worked in randomized groups at the white boards to calculate the living expenses of a student attending university. We learned that going to school while living on our own isn't cheap!

Please ask me about my group's calculations strategies. What operations did we use?

Check out the English version of our question below:

Qui suis-je?

Hello! Happy Thursday!

This morning in Math with worked independently or with a partner to create "Qui suis-je" Math problems.
After choosing our mystery number, we created 4-6 clues, going from more general to more specific, to reveal the mystery number.
Mme Careen then checked over our work to make sure she arrived at the same number we had in mind.
She will now type up our "Qui suis-je" questions and they will be used as our Math starters over the coming weeks!

Please ask me: Did I work with a partner or on my own? What is my mystery number? What clues did I create to reveal my number?

Science Review

Hello! Happy Wednesday!

Today in Science, as another form of review for our upcoming assessment, we worked with a partner (assigned randomly) to answer True/False questions about vertebrates. We then corrected the sheet as a whole class and found, for the most part, that we are feeling confident with our vertebrate knowledge!

Please ask me about what questions I knew well and what ideas I need to review for Friday. Please also ask me about the difference between an alligator and a crocodile! (Mme is so silly sometimes!)

Have a great afternoon. Stay warm!

Math Match-up!

Today in Math, we worked with our table groups to match-up sets of numbers represented as: a picture, a percent, a fraction, a ratio and a decimal number.

Please ask me about my group's strategy. What numbers were easiest to match? Which ones were a bit tricky and why?

Thursday Math!

Hello, friends of learning!

We had a great morning filled with a double-Math block and Français presentations.

We started with an activity rotation of Tangrams, Sky Scrapers and "Égalité" Challenges.
We worked with or along side our table-mates to complete each task.
Please ask me about the activities: Which one was my favourite? Which one was the most challenging?

For Math period #2, we worked in randomized teams of 3 to solve different percent problems, all of which involved a set of animals with different characteristics.

Ex: There are 8 animals. 50% have stripes. 70% are in a tree.

What might that drawing look like? Is there more than one way to represent the criteria?

What other scenarios can you create with percents, using 8, 10, 20 or even 25 animals?

Painted Cube

Today in Math we explored the following question:

Painted Cube

Paint all the sides of a 3 x 3 x 3 cube. Once it is dry take it apart into its 1 x 1 x 1 unit cubes. How many of these unit cubes have paint on three faces? Two faces? One face? No faces? Explore for 4 x 4 x 4, etc.

We all worked well in our groups, approaching the task and explaining our work in so many different ways. Please ask me: What was my group's strategy? How did the answers change as the cube's dimensions increased? What answer won't change, regardless of the size of the cube? Why?

It's Great to Be Back!

Hello! Happy April!

It was great to see a classroom of smiling faces this morning! We were also happy to welcome a new student to our learning community. Welcome, Savinah!

This morning, we started with a "Trouve Quelqu'un Qui" activity to see what our classmates were up to over the break.

We then began a Math unit about percents, and started by watching the short video, "If the World Were a Village." We took the data shared in the film and represented it in different ways: tables, 100 blocks and circle graphs.

Please ask me what information was most surprising and which one made me think the most. (Mme's biggest takeaway was that the world's resources are not equally divided and there are way too many people who go daily without having enough food to eat.)

We finished the morning with a not-so-appetizing Science activity: a final observation of our Mycètes (Fungi) bread. The bread was left in an airtight container over the break, and the bread mold grew, grew, grew! Our conclusion: Fungi do thrive in humid environments over dry environments, as we expected. Also, moldy bread, even when sealed in a ziploc bag, is stinky!

We are looking forward to a great week of learning! :)
