Division of decimal numbers!

 Hello! Happy Wednesday!

We were happy to welcome back Mrs Jones as we began our exploration of dividing decimal numbers. Working in our table groups, using base 10 blocks, we built, divided and switched out blocks to find the answer to a short series of questions.

Please ask me about Math class this morning. What question did we work on? What was the most challenging part of the process? Did I learn something new?

In Science, we continued our discussion of fluids. Today, we had help from our favourite scientist, Bill Nye! (CLICK HERE if you'd like to see Bill in action!) Please ask me about fluids: What is a fluid? What are some of its properties?

We will continue our exploration of fluids in class tomorrow.

Have a great afternoon! :)

SPLAT!

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Splat! What is the hidden value behind each splat?

What about in this picture?

Or this one?

Today in Math we started exploring the idea of mixed number fractions using Fraction Splats!

Knowing that each splat covers the same value, we worked with out table groups to deduce the hidden value. We solved the splats by drawing, adding, subtracting, dividing and negotiating with our classmates.

How would you solve a splat?

An ELA Note from Mme Chernick (and Friday Agenda Items)!

Our last unit for ELA this year is a Lit Circle with novels set in World War II. The class has been separated into book groups and together they have come up with a reading schedule. Their task is to meet with me weekly (after having read the assigned section of their book) and say something. They have a variety of things that they can comment on with helpful prompts to encourage them to share. Here is the reading schedule for each group. It is so important for them to read the assigned sections on time or else the Lit Circle doesn't really work. Happy Reading Students!

Pizza Party Planning

Here's the scenario:

You are planning a party for your class. There are 23 students in your class and you have a budget of $70 to spend on pizza, drinks and chips. Plates, cups and napkins will be provided.

    * A 2L bottle of pop is $1.79
    * A large bag of chips is $3.45
    * A large pizza (10 slices) is $8.50

How would you spend the money? There is more than one way it can be spent. Choose the solution that you believe is the best. Be ready to explain and defend why your solution is the best option.

Please ask me about my group's solution. How many of each item did we order? Why did we feel this was the best option? What was the total amount of money we spent?

Moose Hide Campaign

Today we recognize Moose Hide Campaign Day.

Indigenous peoples have had a deep and sacred connection with the natural world since time immemorial. This relationship has always included harvesting practices such as hunting, fishing, plant gathering, and berry picking. In this context, moose have always represented an important source of food and clothing for Indigenous communities and for many non-Indigenous communities.

For many generations, moose hide was used for ceremonial purposes and for making moccasins, jackets, gloves, rope, etc. It is associated with gentleness, warmth, comfort, hope, and love. The use of the moose hide for this campaign honours this sacred relationship and keeps the traditional protocols and teachings of our Elders alive.

The Moose Hide Campaign was created as a way to engage men and boys in efforts to end violence against Indigenous women and girls. As men took up the challenge to wear the moose hide and participate in ceremonial fasting events, so too did many women become involved. As a result, both the campaign and the role of women in the campaign have evolved. While the campaign still focuses on engaging men and boys, it has grown to engage all Canadians, including women and girls, in ending domestic and gender-based violence against women and children.

We know that in Canada, women have a 20% higher risk of being victimized by men, Indigenous women report experiencing spousal abuse at 3 times the rate of non-Indigenous women, transgender and gender diverse people are nearly twice as likely as cisgendered women to experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

We respect the dignity and gender identity of all peoples and believe all LGBTQ2S+ are sacred and we support any effort to raise awareness and bring an end to gender-based and domestic violence across all sectors of society.

A Math Guest!

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

This morning in Math we welcomed Mrs. Jones, one of our school division's Numeracy coaches. Working in pairs, we explored how to represent decimal numbers using base-ten blocks.

The centaine, dizaine and unité blocks we are used to "transformed" into unité, dixième and centième blocks for this task.

We will use the ideas introduced today later this week as we begin exploring the multiplication of decimal numbers.

Please ask me about this morning's Math-tivity. What did I notice? How can we switch one set of blocks to represent another? What did I find challenging? Did I have an "A HA!" moment?

Monday Monsters!

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in class we worked on a special drawing-monsters task. Over the past few weeks, the students in Mme McKenzie's class have been working on their technical writing by creating a specific set of steps to draw a monster, and we were tasked with testing out the instructions! We each received a set of instructions to follow in order to create a unique monster-piece.

Please ask me about the monster(s) I drew. What parts were the easiest? The most challenging?

Thanks to Mme McKenzie and the students in Room 209 for including us in their fun writing activity!
