Happy Summer!

It's 9:00am and the halls are quiet. I'm forever surprised at how quickly a school year can fly by.

As I look around my semi-boxed-up, ready-for-summer-cleaning classroom, it astounds me to think how much learning and growing we did this year together as a team. Through ups and downs, we set goals, celebrated successes, worked hard, had fun, learned and shared some hard lessons, collaborated with our peers, set new standards for ourselves, set out on field trip adventures and truly grew into our roles as " les chevaliers."

I have no doubt that as you continue to grow as learners, and as people, you will achieve many wonderful things. It has been an honour and a pleasure being your teacher. My door will always be open to you for a "Bonjour," a Funky Fish dance break and a high-five celebration.

And, because this blog was created for and truly belongs to you, the students, I am signing off by letting your words share what this year has meant to you. Wishing you all the most wonderful summer!

À la prochaine, mes amis.

💚, Mme Careen

My favourite memory is the Funky Fish! - Keegan

My favourite memory from the year is the winter dance. That is my favourite memory because I had so much fun dancing and I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. I am sad to leave this class but I know I will make even more memories next year. - Adrianne

My favourite memory is going to the movie theatre. - Max

My favourite memory of 2023 in Mme Careen's class probably has to be when got to hold preserved crustaceans, sea sponges, etc. in jars. - Emma

My favourite memories from this year are hanging ou with my friends and doing with Funky Fish. - Mac

My favourite memory from 6th grade is going to see Pil. - Eloise

My memory was the day before winter break when we had a big dance in the gym. It was during the last two periods and almost the whole school was there and it was a really fun experience. It is definitely my favourite memory of all the wonderful things we got to experience, see and have the chance to make a wonderful memory that I will always remember. - Scarlett

A good memory from this year is when we measured the size of the Hindenburg. - Charlie

My favourite memory is when we went to the aviation museum. - Rose

My favourite memories from this year are playing basketball with Max, Keegan and Mac, and the Funky Fish. - Jason

Mon souvenir préféré est quand nous sommes allés au cinéma pour une sortie scolaire. - Daniel

My memory is when we do the Funky Fish. - Melody

My favourite memory is the AAiM field trip. - Kinley

A memory of this year that I will never forget is at the start of the year, Mme Careen gave us questions to ask every single person in the class and then we had to write their name if they did it. I also will never forget how in June 2022 we got to visit Ness and our classes for the coming year. I thought that Ness was a really big school, but then I realized that my old school was just really small. I think Mme Careen is a great teacher and I will never forget her. - Myla

Qui est l'intrus? (Which one doesn't belong?)

Hello! Happy Thursday!

Today in Math we set out to determine 'which one doesn't belong?'

Let's try one together:

Let's consider each number in the square above. Can you make a case for why each number might not belong?
17: It is the only prime number and the only number smaller than 25.
26: It is the only number with the digit 2.
44: It is the only number with repeated digits and the only number that has a factor of 11.
65: It is the only multiple of 5 and it's the only one where the sum of the digits isn't 8.

What else did you notice? What other reason would a number not belong?

Please ask me about what photos my group had. What did we notice quickly? What took some thinking? Did I work with numbers or pictures? Was one set easier than the other?

Looking for more 'intruder' fun? Visit THIS LINK! Have fun! :)

Question of the day: Would the Hindenburg fit in our schoolyard?

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Science we set out to see if the Hindenburg, measuring at a length of 245m long and 41m in diameter would fit in our schoolyard. Armed with meter sticks and mental math strategies (for adding 18 together multiple times) we determined that yes, lengthwise it would just fit.

Imagining something that large flying through the sky is incredible!

4. Ask me about the Hindenburg explosion! Here is another clip we watched in class today.

5. We will be doing a francophone music listening activity in class this week. To facilitate this process (and to not have 20 different songs playing aloud in the class at once) students should have their own headphones to use. While additional pairs may be available, this is not always a guarantee. Thank you for your support with this item.

A Busy Thursday!

 Hello! Happy Thursday!

We had a busy morning of learning together: French reading, a final mental math assessment, a fun French video, a properties of fluids review, a discussion of force diagrams and a Math fractions assessment. Phew!

Please ask me about my morning. What went well? What did I find challenging? Is there anything I need to review?

Thanks for the super effort this morning, team! Keep up the great week! :)

Les aéronefs!

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Science we began designing and testing an aircraft. Using a straw as our main fuselage, we are adding circular wings made from different types of paper in different sizes and widths to see which prototype will fly the best. We will continue our planning and constructing in class tomorrow.

Please ask me about my aircraft: what type of paper did I use? What design am I working on? How did my first few designs fly? What is my next design idea for tomorrow?

Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

Hello! Happy Thursday!

In Math, we are currently working on converting mixed numbers (ex: 4 2/3) to improper fractions (ex: 14/3) and vice versa. We are showing our work using drawings (les dessins), numbers lines (les droites numériques), multiplication + addition / division + subtraction. We ended our class this morning with a short exit slip as a check-in to see how things are going.

Please ask me about the exit slip: What questions did I choose? What strategies did I try? What do I understand well? What am I still wondering about?

We will continue working on this concept next week.

Have a great long weekend! :)

Does Air Have a Mass?

Hello! Happy Wednesday!

Today in Science we set out to prove that air has a mass.

Using a 2L pop bottle, a bottle pump and an electronic scale, we pumped air into our bottle in 25-pump increments and noted the mass each time. We noticed that while the changes weren't huge, we did see the mass of the bottle begin to increase in increments of 0,1g thus proving that yes, air does have a mass!

Please ask me about the experiment: What did I notice? What was the biggest challenge? What calculations were necessary? What is the mass of one single pump of air?
