A Novel Study + Monday Agenda Items

Zamboni by François Gravel

We have started a novel study (Zamboni) in Français. We will be reading the book together as a class and will be dong word work, class discussion, and independent reflection with each chapter. For the next three weeks, if students are absent from school, they will be asked to check in Teams to read (and listen to) the day's chapter and to complete the assigned questions. (The questions can be completed and submitted in Teams, or written by hand and turned in upon return to school.) If a chapter was completed in class, it will be uploaded to Teams by 12:30 the same day. No new post = no new chapter to read. Keeping up-to-date with the story will be critical to demonstrating an understanding of the text. Thank you in advance for your hard work!

100 Day!

Hello, friends of learning! Happy Tuesday! Happy 100th day of school!

We had a great morning celebrating 100 days of learning together!

First up, a 100-day themed Math puzzles!

Next up, a 100-day themed Amazing Race activity!

Finally, Mme's favourite activity: "Le défi de 100 secondes." How many push-ups and chair sits can you do in 100 seconds? How many times can you print your name or hop on one foot? After estimating our totals, we put ourselves to the test to see if our predictions were correct!

Watch us in action HERE or HERE or HERE or HERE!

Happy 100 Day! Here's to 100 more great days of learning. :)

Bean Sorting!

Today in Science we sorted beans!

We each received a small scoop of a dried bean mix and then, with the help of a word wall created yesterday in class, we worked to create a dichotomous key to classify the beans into groups. We had to ensure our questions were specific and the subgroups were clearly labeled.

Please ask me about my dichotomous key. What questions did I ask? What was the trickiest part of this task?

Math + Flower Bouquets

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in Math we worked in randomized groups at the white boards to solve the following work problem:

We discussed what key words revealed that it was a factors question over a multiples question, and noted there would be more than one solution.

Please ask me about my group's strategy. How many bouquets could be made and sold at the craft fair? What answer was the most reasonable and why?

Sorting Objects

Hello! Happy Friday!

Today in Science we worked in groups of 4 to created a dichotomous key (un clé dichotomique) for a set of objects. We had to ensure our questions were clear and written in a yes/no format. Our keys were then tested (or will be tested on Monday) by another group.

Please ask me about my group's object set. What was the easiest and most difficult question to ask? Did I have the chance to test another group's key today? If so, how did it go?

Show Up! Listen Up! Speak Up!

Hello, friends of learning!

This morning, we had the opportunity to participate in the "Anti-Black Racism Presentation," presented by Inspiration Republic. Students from all five middle schools in the school division attended the virtual event.

The presentation sought to empower students to put an end to Anti-Black racism, and stressed the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect no matter what they look like. (You can see a short promo video of the presentation by clicking this link: Anti-Black Racism Presentation: People You May Know)

Over the hour-long presentation, in addition to a virtual tour of the black settlement in Buxton, ON and the sharing of stories of "People You May Know," we learned/reviewed/experienced the definitions and analogies of:

  • racism: the unfair treatment of a person simply because of the colour of their skin
  • racism in systems: the unfair treatment in the education/healthcare/justice system of someone because of the colour of their skin (* high school police story)
  • microagression: small, subtle and often unintended form of discrimination (* papercut analogy)
  • white privilege: advantage of a white person on the basis of their race (* running a 10k race with a 50lb backpack analogy)
  • allyship: standing up for others and taking up someone else's struggle as your own (applies to racism, but can also apply to anyone who is struggling.)

We learned that we can all be agents of change, starting today. We don't have to wait until we're older. When we: Show Up! Listen Up! Speak Up! we can rise up, together.

After the presentation, we took time to reflect individually and each committed to something we can do, starting today, to be an ally. Mme compiled our ideas into a list (see below) that will be posted in our classroom as a reminder of how we can be a friend to others.

It's important that the discussion of these themes extends beyond the classroom. Please take time over the coming days and weeks to continue the conversation started in the presentation today. We all play an important role in building a safe, equitable and welcoming community.

Math + Art!

Today in Math we learned about les nombres premiers et composés (prime and composite numbers).

We used a 100-chart to create our version of a 'sieve of Eratosthenes' which is an ancient algorithm for finding prime numbers. It does so by using multiples of prime numbers to mark off composite numbers, starting with the first prime number which is 2.

All numbers circled are prime numbers. 1 is unique as it is neither primer nor composite.
This chart will also be a good reference tool as we continue our work with factors and multiples.

Math + Cake!

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in Math we put our knowledge of factors and le pgfc (plus grand facteur commun) to good use: We calculated how we can offer perfect squares of cake to our guests at a party!
Check out the question below:

Please ask me what strategy my table group and I used to arrive at the answer. What are the dimensions of the biggest piece (square) of cake? How many square pieces of cake were we able to get with these dimensions?

Who knew Math could be so useful and delicious?!

Looking forward to a great week!

Sorting objects in Science!

Hello! Happy Thursday!

Today in Science we worked in groups to classify a series of objects.

We asked a yes/no" question to divide and subdivide the objects.

It is important that our questions are clear to ensure they will be answered the same by everyone.

Please ask me about my group's questions and categories. What was the easiest and trickiest part of the activity?
